Episode 151: D&C 51 – Sections 69 and 70

Bryce is going on a road trip! Drop him a line at nakedmormonism@gmail.com if you live near a major Mormon historical site. He’d love to meet you!

Chapter 69 is a tangible revelation with a measurable result, and measurable results were achieved!!!!! Oliver Cowdery needs a chaperone on his trip to Zion while holding all of the church’s money and revelations, John Whitmer is now designated as gopher/church historian. Chapter 70 is all about giving your excess to the bishop’s church, kind of, but in reality we aren’t quite sure what it’s saying. #equality

Newel K Whitney becomes a bishop in basically the next chapter. Priestcraft is mentioned in the Book of Mormon, but since David didn’t know about it, I didn’t know about it.

Drink count – 7, or about one beer

A few days after this episode aired I recorded the next two chapters with Jim Van Heel. Bam! There was the revelation on December 4, 1831 naming Newel as First Bishop. I’m proceeded to create a Wikipedia account just so I could update Newel’s Wikipedia page to give the correct date. Not sure if I’m proud or ashamed of that?

I hope I didn’t make you overly paranoid about spoilers. But I did feel very important having my full name stated twice by Bryce. So lofty!

As for priestcraft, I don’t know that it’s a spoiler. It got mentioned a lot in the Book of Mormon. It was one of the few sins the BoM lists by name: priestcraft, adultery, being rich …

And on a completely unrelated note, I just noticed that your Twitter feed has been quiet for the past few months. If that’s intentional, cool. If not and you want help automating your social media feeds to update when you post a new ep, let me know.

Back to listening to the rest of the episode …

Yeah… I basically just haven’t gotten around to logging into Twitter since i took over the show? I should probably get on that, eh? πŸ˜›

It’s a bit tricky if priestcraft is a spoiler or not. I knew what it was, sort of, because it was in BOM. But… the modern day church seems to be wildly different than what is vaguely describe in BOM, and is absolutely different than what’s in the D&C. It’s probably not a spoiler?
