Click to Listen: Episode 48: Alma 44-46
We finally get our bloody end to the battle from the last episode (you’ll never guess who wins). Next, Alma kinda dies or something. Then Helaman does a lousy job appointing new priests and they all decide to team up and take him him out. Will the covenant of peace prevail, or will we have yet another awesome war?

I pledge allegiance to the title
of the united Nephites of the promised land
and to the theocracy, for which it stands,
one nation, under god,
with liberty and justice for some.

What? Are there yet more Arnold Friberg paintings left to appreciate? Damn right, there are! Here’s “Captain Moroni Raises the Title of Liberty”:
Like any iconic image, this has inspired a lot of imitation, like this Tea Party-friendly image:
Or this particularly distasteful one:
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that these are not parodies making fun of the Captain Moroni story. These are from faithful church members wanting to apply the story to their own lives. See here; http://kkjjkent.blogspot.com/2008/11/my-husband-is-so-cool.html . I guess the point of this “political art” is, “Support Prop 8, or like Moroni, I and my army will put you to death”? Maybe he didn’t think it through. (To be fair, I think the watermelon brain is cool.)
Thank you, Pininterest, for never being tacky:
And I wasn’t kidding about the association with the Tea Party:
You can have a framed print for just $46.99:

This could go on all day. So finally, I give you the action figure:

Nothing says freedom like denying others the right to whom they marry.

This couldn’t be more ironic either, given Mormonism’s history of non-traditional marriages.

I totally had one of those action figures as a kid.

I was debating whether to even refer to it as an “action” figure, since it can’t be put into different action poses, but “display figurine” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Wait… who said Captain Moroni isn’t the same Moroni that visited Joseph Smith. It absolutely is the same guy.
November 10, 2014 at 5:46 pm
The Moroni who visited Joseph Smith was Mormon’s son, who died approx 400 BCE. Captain Moroni was a Roman warrior who waved a flag before Christ came to America.
Oh, and the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus are 2nd cousins.

*CE, not BCE, right?

There are two Moronis (Moronii?) in the BoM, the angel that visited was the second one. Mormon named him after this famous Nephite general.

My bad! I knew it was Moroni from the Book of Mormon, but I guess I never made the connection that there were 2 Moroni’s. Thanks for the clarification.

Sorry for the duplicate image/post. My browser must have been cached bc it was only showing one comment when I submitted my comment. The Duke’s post was much more thorough than mine.

David, good news: there’s a video of the Moroni/Zarahemnah battle on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzTZA5AXsdQ
Might wanna watch it on 2x speed since, well, I don’t know of any video the church has made that’s fun to watch.

The actor portraying Captain Moroni is Broadway sensation and fellow ex-Mormon Will Swenson who happens to be married to the intoxicating five-time-Tony-award-winning Audra McDonald.

I’m getting close to catching up, but this video fits this episode so well!
