King Benjamin tells his people that Jesus is coming, which of course they already knew. Then we learn that mormon god is a socialist, and it is probably the nicest thing this book has said so far!  Check out the links below:

You’ve gotta take a look at Mymo Prophet Matt Timion’s awesome book Forgotten Faith

    Another insight into Mormon theology.

Mormons actually divide the atonement into 2 parts. There was the suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Mormons believe that Christ suffered the sins of the world, which was so agonizing that it literally caused him to bleed from every pore. This was for the atonement for our sins. Then he died on the cross and was resurrected, which was somehow necessary for us to have eternal life.

So, when the Book of Mormon talks about suffering beyond what a normal human could bear, it is talking about the suffering in the Garden, not the crucifixion.

I stand behind my statements on the show… plenty more people have suffered way worse. That’s a sad fact, but it’s still a fact.

I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree with you here, David.

If we assume LDS theology correct, only 1 human has ever had to suffer the atonement, and we really don’t have any basis to say that other humans have suffered as much. There is just nothing we can compare it to, and we are forced to believe what the theology says.

It might also be worth noting that Mormons are not Trinitarians. They are modalists. They believe that God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost are 3 distinct and separate beings. Part of LDS theology says that a normal human would have died well before the atonement was finished and that Jesus had to be 1/2 God in order to suffer the agony that he did. It was THAT painful.

Of course, it’s all crap anyways, so this is like arguing over whether Darth Vader could beat Gandalf in a fight. 🙂 (Oh, and yes, Vader would whip Gandalf’s ass!!! He’d make that balrog look like a cuddly kitten!!)

Scottie, doesn’t that make them flat out polytheists? Modalism still posits a single entity that appears to us in different forms.

On this topic, this video on the trinity is hilarious:

As the show’s unofficial pronunciator (though all this time I thought I was the unofficial chronology plausibility checker, but who am I to refuse another calling?), I’ll just point out that “succor” is pronounced that same as “sucker”, but yeah, it means help, aid, relief, etc.

the word “divers” is essentially the same as “diverse.” It’s an older adjective that is no longer used.

Unfortunately, no scuba divers in the Book of Mormon.

Anyone else wonder if the whole “rich give to the poor even if you don’t think they deserve it” was aimed at Martin Harris and perhaps the Witmers? Joe was continually on the scrounge at this time – so why not write generosity to the unworthy into the Book?
